nicholas sparks hatred of lit*

You ever read a book by Nicholas Sparks? If not, here's the formula:

Two main characters' love for each other is greater than that of family, home, duty, career, country; The love typically is not approved by family, society, etc.

One of the lovers dies leaving the other feeling so utterly grateful for having been in love with him or her.

Readers almost always fall in love with these unrealistically "good" characters. Come out of the theater saying things like, "I hope I find love like that one day". Many times they are actually saying it to their date. Some cry, or even facebook about it.

Formula makes for some of the worst films in history...rotten tomato awards to all:
Dear John, Nights in Rodanthe, Walk to Remember, The Notebook. puke, puke, puke, puke.
I'd rather watch footage of the oil spill. May I add, every time I have tried to watch footage of the oil spill I really do puke. I keep trying and every time I have run into the restroom...and, no, I am not pregnant.

*Please note: if Nicholas Sparks inspires reluctant readers, then I guess he's alright with me. Just, please, do not recommend one of his books to me. You're asking for my soapbox. Really. His books are so lame.

meh

meh.

I don't get it. The first time I way this word was when my dear colleague Megan McCann wrote it. I pretended to know what it meant. I tried so de la bad to understand. I feared asking others what it mean. maybe they would think I was a clueless loser like Glenn Beck for asking such a silly question.

then a few weeks later all my cousins in their early 20s were using it on the facebook. After that, I asked my brother what he thought of it. His answer: "meh." so much for getting answers. Guess I won't have cultural capital when it comes to this new slang.

flight 191 memorial petition--sign it!

Today is the 31st anniversary of the Flight 191 plane crash. My cousin Emmi's sixth grade class and working hard to create a memorial as this year's service project.

Check this out. She was totally on the 5 o'clock news yesterday.

If you wanna, please sign the petition at the Project Flight 191 Website.

read these books about dogs!

Here are a couple books I enjoyed, and, even if you don't like to read, if you're a dog caregiver, I think you may enjoy them. They're quick reads, hilarious, and clever. Not much else to say about them. I don't like to give it away. I worked at a bookstore for two years. You should just take my word for it. and just a sidenote, I hate the label "dog owner". People don't "own" their dogs. The way I look at it, they own us.
Living with a dog is such a most awesome calling and an expensive responsibility. You really have to love and be ready for a 10-20 year responsibility. I mean, why else would we walk 'em around and pick up their crap if we didn't love them?
Oh yeah, so here are da books.

BOOKS ABOUT DOGGIES THAT YOU SHOULD READ...really:

Patrick Kain (counselor, not hockey playa) emailed me this with the subject: Very important.
